Installing Airway
Installation takes about a minute. Because Airway isn't notarized by Apple yet, macOS adds one extra step in Privacy & Security — here's exactly what to do.
- 1
- 2
Drag Airway to Applications
In the window that opens, drag the Airway icon into your Applications folder, then eject the disk image.
- 3
Open Airway — and expect a warning
The first time you open Airway, macOS shows a dialog saying it “could not verify Airway is free of malware.” Click Done — not “Move to Trash.” This is expected; see the explanation below.
- 4
Allow Airway in Privacy & Security
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll down to the Security section. You'll see “Airway was blocked to protect your Mac.” Click Open Anyway, then confirm with your password or Touch ID.
- 5
Approve the fan-control helper
On first run, Airway registers a small helper that talks to your Mac's fan hardware. Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions, find Airway under “Allow in the Background,” and turn it on — Airway appears in your menu bar.
Note: on macOS 15 Sequoia and later, the Privacy & Security route above is the only way — the old right-click → Open trick no longer bypasses the warning.
Why does macOS block Airway?
The warning appears because Airway isn't notarized — Apple's stamp of approval that requires a paid Apple Developer Program membership at $99 per year. Airway is built by a solo student developer in the Philippines, and honestly, that fee isn't in the budget yet.
The dialog means "Apple hasn't checked this app," not "this app is harmful." Nothing about Airway itself triggers it — it's purely the missing signature. Once the app earns enough to cover the developer membership, every release will be signed and notarized and this step will disappear.
